What is Hair Transplantation?

Hair transplantation is a natural and permanent solution for individuals experiencing hair loss or baldness due to thinning. It involves the transfer of healthy hair follicles through microsurgical techniques to areas where the hair follicle is no longer active and baldness has occurred. Hair transplantation is a personalized procedure that is tailored to each individual's needs and is typically performed by collecting resistant hair follicles from the back of the head and transplanting them into areas of thinning or complete hair loss. The aim is to achieve a natural and permanent hair appearance that is not easily recognizable as being transplanted. Hair transplantation is a minor surgical procedure that should be performed in a hospital environment by experienced doctors and teams. The goal of hair transplantation is to provide individuals with a comfortable and natural-looking appearance through modern medical applications as if they had never experienced hair loss before.

Who can have Hair Transplantation?

Currently, almost 50% of men over the age of 50 experience hair loss problems. Therefore, hair transplantation is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery for men. Hair loss is not a condition exclusive to men. Many women may also experience hair loss or thinning problems.

Why does Hair Loss occur?

One of the most significant causes of hair loss is genetic coding; moreover, it can also occur due to advancing age, traumatic injuries, or various medical conditions. After diagnosis by a doctor, hair transplantation can be successfully applied to all individuals with sufficient hair follicles in the donor area. The transplantation method can also be successfully applied to hair loss in all areas of the body where hair is present, such as eyebrows, mustache, or beard.

How is hair transplantation done?

In the procedure, hair follicles taken from the back of the head, also known as the donor area(nape), are transplanted to the targeted balding area. These hair follicles are called grafts. In rare cases, if there is not enough healthy hair in the donor area(nape) or in the temples, hair follicles can be extracted from other parts of the body such as the arms or chest. The procedure can take a few hours depending on the extent of hair loss. If the balding area is extensive, multiple sessions may be necessary to complete the treatment. The procedure is generally performed under sedation and local anesthesia. After the hair transplant, a special bandage is applied to the head. The person is discharged from the hospital after 1-2 hours. Although it is rare, pain can be controlled with pain relievers. Generally, after a 3-day period of rest, a person can return to work with their head covered. The first dressing change is performed on the fifth day.

What methods are used for hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation can be successfully performed using the FUE method, which does not leave any scars, or the DHI method, which may leave a slight scar on the back of the head. In the FUE method, hair follicles are individually harvested and transplanted to the areas with hair loss, while in the DHI method, a strip of skin containing hair is removed from the back of the head. The person undergoing the hair transplant procedure should have healthy hair on the back and sides of the head to be used as donor areas. Other factors such as hair color, texture, waviness, and thickness also affect the outcome of the procedure.

The choice of method is made after analyzing the hair and scalp, taking into account the person's priorities. Although the FUE method is usually preferred due to its scarless nature, in some cases, the DHI method may also be required. Hair transplantation can be performed not only for baldness but also to increase hair density in thinning areas.

What is the most important factor for hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation is a serious surgical procedure, and it is important to minimize the risks associated with it by performing the procedure in a hospital setting. It is crucial that the procedure is performed by plastic surgeons who have received good training and have experience in this field in order to achieve the best results. For the hair transplantation to be successful, the transplanted hair follicles must quickly establish a blood supply in the recipient area, which is known as "graft survival". With the correct technique, the success rate of hair transplantation is quite high. For a natural appearance, it is important to transplant the hair at the correct distance, angle, and density towards the balding areas.

After hair transplantation, do the transplanted hairs fall out?

Transplanted hairs will fall out within a few weeks following the transplant procedure, but this is a normal occurrence. The reason for this is that the transplanted hairs will begin to regrow after 3-4 months. Once the temporary shedding has resolved, the transplanted hair follicles will maintain their characteristics and not fall out. However, the original hairs in the same area may continue to fall out over time, resulting in a decrease in hair density, which may require future hair transplantation. Post-surgical hair loss may continue to progress. If an unnatural appearance occurs in the newly established hairline area, another surgical intervention may be required in the future.

What are the risks of an unskilled hair transplant procedure?

Like any medical procedure, a hair transplant can carry some risks if not performed under appropriate conditions. However, if the hair transplant procedure is carried out by an experienced plastic surgeon in a hospital setting, complications are very rare. Hair transplantation is a long procedure and depending on the degree of baldness, several transplants may be required over a period of 1-2 years. Although very rare, complications such as infection and noticeable scarring may occur. Postoperative pain, discomfort, slight bruising, and swelling may be seen but it can be controlled with painkillers. Numbness that resolves on its own may occur in the areas where hair is taken and transplanted within 2-3 months.

Is hair transplant a medical procedure or an aesthetic procedure?

A hair transplant is a medical procedure, but its aesthetic aspect is more significant. If the donor area of the patient is well-evaluated and the frontal hairline is naturally determined in the area to be transplanted, a style suitable for the person's image can be created. In this sense, it is a complete aesthetic procedure.

Who is eligible for hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation can be performed on individuals of any age who have experienced hair loss due to various reasons, starting from their 20s, and who do not have any physiological illnesses that would prevent the procedure. As long as there are sufficient follicles in the donor area, hair transplantation surgery can be performed on all individuals.

Am I eligible for hair transplantation

If you have completed your physical development,

If you do not have any physiological conditions that would prevent you from having a hair transplant,

If there are enough suitable hair follicles in the donor area on your scalp,

If there is a suitable space for hair follicle transplantation in the recipient area, Then you are a suitable candidate for a hair transplant.

Hair transplant surgery is successful not only in male pattern baldness but also in various hair loss conditions such as local gaps that may occur as a result of various diseases, scar tissue, burn scars, or surgical scars. Hair transplant is also successfully performed in women. Especially for larger bald areas in women, non-shaved hair transplants can be performed.

You can schedule a consultation with our doctor and have a hair analysis as soon as possible. Your doctor will inform you about what to do and avoid after the hair transplant surgery.

Does the transplanted hair look natural?

Transplanted hair should be done by experienced doctors and specialists in order to achieve a natural appearance. In hair transplant operations performed by experienced specialists in the right healthcare institution, a level of naturalness can be achieved that cannot be detected where the transplant was performed. With the Sapphire and DHI techniques we apply in hair transplant, we aim to achieve maximum density in the hair. On average, there are 100 hair strands in 1 cm square for a person. With new techniques, we can fit 80 follicles or hair strands in 1 cm square. The result is aimed to be as close as possible to the image that the patient has in mind while keeping the hairline in mind.

How is the hairline determined?

The hairline is an individual anatomical line. İt is determined based on the natural border of hair growth, where the forehead skin ends and the scalp skin begins. The most important factor in hairline design during hair transplant surgery is to avoid damaging the forehead muscles or facial expression muscles. The hairline can be adjusted according to the patient's facial structure, hair type, previous hair loss pattern, and condition of the scalp skin, without interfering with the forehead line, even in cases of a wide forehead or significant hair loss on the sides. If a patient requests an unsuitable hairline, medical necessities, an anatomical structure of the face, and possible outcomes are explained, and the most appropriate hairline and hair shape are determined.

How is a hair transplant operation performed?

The hair transplant operation can be performed with or without shaving according to the operation style determined by the expert doctor in hair transplantation.

First, the hairy tissue and the area to be transplanted are planned. The hairy tissue is shaved according to the course of the procedure. Local anesthesia is applied, and the hair follicles are individually collected with micro-surgical tools.

Channels are opened considering the direction, angle, and density of the hair in the area where the hair is desired to grow. The harvested follicles are placed one by one into these channels with meticulous and precise work.

The aim throughout the entire operation is to provide a healthy and permanent natural-looking hair appearance that will not reveal the transplantation.

The operation is completed in an average of 6 to 8 hours.
